Effective price promotion strategy to medical advertisement depending on relationship norm

This research examined how hospital’s price promotion on medical products can be perceived as not profits-seeking but appropriately benefits-giving to patients. For this, relation norms of consumer on hospital’s medical care should be thoroughly understood in planning for the price promotion. There are two types of relation norms. First, hospitals can be expected to be competent to provide the best medical products and be a competitive organization in the market. In this case, consumers apply the norm of market-pricing, and believe that their achievable outcome from the medical product depends on their ability to pay. On the contrary, hospitals can also be expected to provide general health-care for every common people and be a communal organization which supports basic humane life. In this case, consumers apply the norm of communal-sharing, and believe that everyone should be easily accessible to the medical products regardless of their ability to pay. For each relation norm, accordingly, price promotion should be presented in a different form. There are two types of price promotion strategy; price-off sales strategy and value-added sale strategy. These two price promotion frames give a clue for how to increase the perceived appropriateness on the hospital’s marketing action. Specifically, since the value-added strategy highlights achievable outcome, the consumers who have market-pricing norm would perceive it as appropriate and fit their expectation. In contrast, price-off strategy lowers the price barrier, so presenting this strategy to consumers who have communal sharing norm makes perceived fit high. Study 1 examined the effect of relation norm types and discount promotion frames, by manipulating relation norms through attributes of two different medical services. The result shows that a utilitarian medical service which triggers communal-sharing norm fits with price-off strategy, whereas a hedonic medical service which triggers market-price norm fits with value-added strategy. These perceived fits also enhanced purchase intention. Study 2 was aimed to confirm the previously observed interaction effect could be induced, even when we use a same medical service with just different relation norms on hospital triggered by advertisement. As we expected, when communal-sharing norm was focused, price-off framing was recognized as more suitable strategy than value-added framing. While when market-pricing norm was focused, value-added framing was perceived more appropriate. These perceived fits marginally enhanced purchase intention. To conclude, the results have theoretical implications that the effect of price promotions of medical products can be associated with consumer’s relation norms on hospital. Also, this study can give practical implications that marketers have to consider relation norms can be triggered not only by the attributes of medical product itself, but also by the advertisements of hospital. As marketing promotion in the medical sector has been getting more and more attention and people’s distrust against hospitals has been getting severe, this study’s contribution on which promotion strategy can effectively meet the consumers’ expectations is matter.
