The Phenomenological Study about The Use of Facebook for College Students

Facebook has attracted academic and practical interest as a new social medium having influences not only on the maintenance and expansion of interpersonal relationships, but also on the formation of relationships with corporations. This study set out to identify the meanings of essential use motivation by focusing on a phenomenological perspective about the relations between college students’ use motivations of Facebook and corporations' Facebook management. The findings show that the major motivations for college students to use Facebook were to form and maintain relationships and obtain information. Users made exchanges with their acquaintances through self-expression, but there were negative influences in the domain of quality such as annoyance and inconvenience involved with too light relationships unlike the expansion of quantitative relationships. They categorized their friends that put postings on Facebook often as “attention whores,” a new expression, and raised questions about the degree of self-expression. They also recognized that they could look the same in the eyes of others and remained in the “reading only mode,” not putting any more postings on Facebook. Consequently, the issue of “reading only mode” on Facebook made the users careful about their personal postings and increased the relative percentage of corporate postings. The cycle in turn caused negative reactions to advertising on Facebook. As corporation information increased too much, users got to have a difficult time reading the stories of their friends or acquaintances, expressed negative feelings about the situation itself where they had to pass through many scrolls of advertising pages, and thus formed multiple attitudes about it.
