The present study expands existing body of marketing literature on the fit between brand image and CSR by investigating the moderating role of consumers' intrinsiccharacteristic. Specifically, this study examines two types of consumers' personal tendenciestoward donation(rational and emotional tendencies) and two types of advertisement massages(promotional and preventive massages) to understand whether these variables moderate the association between CSR fit and brand attitudes. Further, this study examineswhether the interaction effects of consumers' donation tendencies and CSR fit on the brandattitudes vary by perceived brand awareness. A sample of 194 university students were randomly assigned to 4 groups formed on the basis of CSR fit(high vs. low fit) and message types(promotionvs. prevention focused messages). Three-way between-subject ANCOVA was utilized to analyzehow CSR fit, brand awareness, and donation tendencies interrelated in predicting the level of brand attitudes. Findings indicated that the high CSR fit was significantly associated with greater brand attitudes. Further, results showed that donation tendencies and message typesmoderated the association between CSR fit and brand attitudes. In specific, this study foundthat the high CSR fit had a stronger influence on brand attitudes for students reporting the rational donation tendency compared to those having the emotional tendency, whereasthe low CSR fit similarly affect brand attitudes across two donation tendencies. Additionally, results showed that with the high CSR fit, brand attitudes were similarly high across university students receiving prevention and promotion massages, while with the low CSR fit, studentshaving the prevention message reported more favorable brand attitudes compared to thosehaving the promotion message. Finally, this study revealed that the shape of the interactionbetween CSR fit and donation tendencies was different across high and low brand awareness.
