Seeking Reasoned Actions through Unreasonable Prospects : Verification of an Integrated Model through Facebook Users' Responses about Sharing Promotional Event Messages

Daniel Kahneman, a renowned psychologist, was awarded a Nobel Prize in Economics in 2002. The committee acknowledged his contribution to the study of economics through revealing that human behaviors cannot be accurately explained by mathematical calculations. Humans often make unreasonable decisions by committing errors in mathematical calculations or considering various situational factors though realizing that the decisions affected by the factors are not mathematically correct. The present study is conducted to provide an expanded view on human decision-making process by applying prospect theory and the theory of reasoned action and integrating them to propose a more complete model explaining human attitudes and behaviors. The authors requested Hankook Research, a leading opinion research firm in Korea, to administer an on-line experiment for this study. A total of 309 adult men and women (all using Facebook regularly) participated in the experiment, in which they were exposed to a series of simulated Facebook timeline pages each including a sweepstakes event message asking the users to share the posting with their friends in order to become eligible for participating in a promotional event and then asked to answer questions regarding their attitudes toward the act(sharing promotional event message with SNS friends), subjective norms, and intentions to perform the behavior. Results show that (1) the Facebook users’ responses to differently manipulated prizes(by their values and probabilities for one to win) did not reveal any significant difference in attitude toward the act; (2) though attitude toward the act was found to have a direct positive effect on behavioral intention, the effect of subjective norm on behavioral intention was found only indirect via attitude toward the act; (3) and people’s tendency of loss aversion was clearly observed in the comparison between the scatterplots of behavioral intention of those from negative subjective norm group and those from positive subjective norm group.
