2(시간의 표상방식: 추상적 표상 vs. 구체적 표상) x2(혜택 소구 유형: 사회적 혜택 vs. 개인적 혜택)의 요인설계로 진행되었다.

The Effect of Time Representation Types and Benefit Appeals on the Volunteer Intention

This study is based on the assumption that volunteering in terms of the time consumption context, representation type of time and benefit appeal types will affect the volunteering intention. The author conducted experiments by both representation type (abstract vs. concrete) and benefit appeal (other-benefit vs. self-benefit) for the factorial design. The first hypothesis is that higher volunteering intention will occur when time is represented by the abstract type rather than by the concrete type. The second hypothesis is that the other-benefit appeal condition will generate the higher intention when time is represented by the abstract type, whereas the self-benefit appeal condition shows the higher intention if time is represented by the concrete type. The study shows that the first hypothesis was supported. Concretely, the condition that the abstract time representation type was more influential than the concrete representation type, which was statistically supported. The second hypothesis was partially supported. When time is represented by the concrete concept, volunteering intention increased in self-benefit appeal more than the other-benefit condition, of which result was statistically significant. However, when time is represented by the abstract concept, volunteering intention was different from neither self-benefit appeal nor other-benefit condition, which was not significant statistically.
