The Role of Temporal Distance in Enhancing Non-Smoking Adolescents’ Intent to Maintain Non-Smoking

The ultimate goal of this study is to offer fundamental data to develop effective communication messages in smoking prevention (e.g., anti-smoking ad messages) for non-smoking adolescents. In order to obtain the goal, the study proposed a conceptual research framework of non-smoking adolescents’ psychological processes underlying the effect of their estimated time for occurrence of smoking-related consequences (i.e., temporal distance) on their intent to maintain non-smoking on the basis of Construal Level Theory and Regulatory Focus Theory. The study also investigated a causal relationship of ‘estimated time for occurrence of smoking-related consequences → risk/benefit perception associated with smoking → intent to maintain non-smoking’ in the proposed model by conducting a survey with non-smoking adolescents. As a result, the risk/benefit perception associated with smoking fully mediated the effect of the non-smoking adolescents’ estimated time for occurrence of smoking-related consequences on the intent to maintain non-smoking. In particular, when non-smoking adolescents estimated a short (vs. long) time for occurrence of smoking-related consequences, they were less (vs. more) likely to perceive benefits than risks associated with smoking so that they had strong (vs. weak) intent to maintain non-smoking. There were no gender differences in the full mediation of the risk/benefit perception associated with smoking. The results provide a practical implication that messages emphasizing short time for occurrence of smoking-related consequences can enhance non-smoking adolescents’ intent to maintain non-smoking.
