The purpose of this study was to analyze the content of Korean newspaper articles on Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) to evaluate their potential capability to enhance the public’s adaptive behavior regarding the health issue. The content analysis focused on constructs drawn from theories in health behavior and communication. The results showed that 58.7% of the sampled news articles contained information about the probability of contracting HPV (i.e., susceptibility information), whereas 86.2% communicated the physical and psychological outcomes of contracting HPV (i.e., severity information). The two constructs were significantly associated, such that articles with susceptibility information were likely to also convey severity information. Response efficacy (i.e., confidence in the positive outcomes of vaccination) information was embedded in 67.1% of the articles, while the rate was only 5.4% for self-efficacy (i.e., confidence in one’ ability to get vaccination). The two constructs tended to appear simultaneously. Content elements capable of reducing the gender gap in the interest, knowledge, and behavior regarding HPV appeared in 20.4% of the sample. Theoretical and practical implications of the findings were discussed, especially in light of the role of mass media in facilitating adaptive cognitive and behavioral changes regarding HPV.
