First or last? : Time to Offer Free Months to Enhance Consumer Attitude about a Subscription Service Promotion

  • Jieun Koo
Consumers encounter various subscription services in daily lives. To have more subscribers, companies offer promotions in diverse formats and one of them is to provide subscribers with extra months for free. 1+1 promotion is an example that purchasers of one-month subscription can enjoy the service for two months with the extra one month free. This research examines whether the timing that a free month is given, particularly at the first or end of a subscription period, affects preference about promotions. Three experiments showed the consistent result that a free month at the end (vs. first) of a subscription service enhances preference about promotions. Specifically, Studies 1 and 2 demonstrated the effect with using an 1+1 online music service promotion and a 6+1 digital TV/movie service promotion, respectively. Study 3 supported our suggestion that the effect arises from a different sequence of outcomes. Offering the first month for free constructs the sequence of a subscription service from free to charged, which leads consumers to experience a declining sequences of utility over the subscription period. In contrast, offering the last month free constructs the subscription sequence from charged to free, which leads consumers to experience an improving sequence of utility. Given that an improving sequence of rewards is preferred over a declining one, a promotion with the last month free is evaluated more attractive.
