Female Images in Korean Cosmetics Market : A Case Study of AMORE PACIFIC's Advertisements

This study examines various images of women as represented in cosmetics advertisements in South Korea from 1945 to present in order to investigate different factors that have contributed to creating ideal images of women in modern Korea. To this end, the study focuses on AMORE PACIFIC cosmetics which sold the most cosmetic products in Korea since its establishment in 1945 and still accounts for up to 70% of the cosmetics market today. Based on the changing demands of the society and the needs of the female consumers, Amore Pacific‘s advertisements are divided into the following three time periods: a) the western standardization and popularity of beauty trends (1945-1960s); b) the emergence of Korean cosmetic industry and the subsequent localized variations of beauty images (1970s-mid 1990s); c) the idolization of healthy and youthful images using “bare-makeup” techniques or function-oriented cosmetics (late 1990s-present). The study reveals that the ideal beauty of women in Korea changed from the emphasis of the facial features by use of color cosmetics to the more functional and practical use of cosmetics by the mid-90s. However, the advertisements began to feature models with baby-like faces and makeups but with a voluptuous body as the anti-aging products dominated the beauty industry in order to meet the increasing demands of the female consumers who desired to look younger than ever regardless of their physical age. The popularity of the so called “dong’an”, or youthful looks then resulted in the extreme glamorization of women's babyish and vulnerable images and thereby affecting the gender dynamics in contemporary South Korea.
