Understanding the Moderating Role of Smartphone-based “Multiscreening” in the Relationship between Ad Skepticism and Ad Avoidance.

The current research aims to explore a consumer’s response to advertising in the smartphone-centered multiscreening environment, a phenomenon attracting an increasing amount of attention as a contemporary audience’s media consumption behavior. For this purpose, using hierarchical regression and simple slope analysis, we tested whether the nature of the relationships between a consumer’s tendency toward disbelief in ad claims (i.e., ad skepticism) and the two types of ad avoidance – cognitive and mechanical - changes as a consumer’s smartphone-based multiscreening level changes. The results indicate that as a consumer’s level of smartphone-based multiscreening increases, the relative impact of ad skepticism on cognitive ad avoidance becomes smaller, supporting the “buffering” moderating effect of smartphone-based multiscreening. On the other hand, in the case of mechanical ad avoidance, measured as a consumer’s intention to use ad skip button, no significant interaction between ad skepticism and multiscreening was detected. Instead, increase in smartphone-based multiscreening is related to decrease in mechanical ad avoidance, supporting a significant main effect of multiscreening on mechanical ad avoidance. Overall, the results of this study suggest a positive role of smartphone-based multiscreening in mitigating a consumer’s ad avoidance. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
