Contemporary donation campaigns often proceed in the form of crowdfunding platforms, with fundraising rates posted in real-ime. The evolution of online platform, with its unprecedented pace, suggests the need for further research on its effects on donation campaigns. Based on construal level theory, this paper aims to examine the effects of donation campaigns for both domestic and foreign beneficiaries, with emphasis on the notions of social distance and ‘probability’, or the likelihood to reach the campaign goal, that remains relatively unexplored concept in construal level theory. The authors conducted an online experiment with 2 × 2 mixed design (distant/close social distance × high/low fundraising rate). The results showed no significant difference of intention to donate between two groups, depending on the social distance. However, the impact of fundraising rate, as well as the interaction effect of social distance and fundraising rate were confirmed as statistically significant. When the fundraising rate was presented as high, people preferred to donate to Korean beneficiaries to African counterpart. In case the rate was low, however, their intention to donate tends to gravitate toward African children. Practical implications of the findings are also discussed with regard to strategies for effective crowdfunding campaigns.
