We propose that decision mode, especially intuition increases the brand extension evaluation more favorably. In accord with this proposition, the purpose of this study is to examine the effect of consumers' decision mode on their evaluation of a brand extension product and to find the mediating role of perceived fit. This study also considers the moderating effect of the consumers' knowledge level and the similarity level of a brand evaluation product. To test our predictions, we conducted a 2(decision mode: deliberation vs. intuition) X 2(similarity level: low vs. high) between-subjects design. The results confirm that consumers using intuition mode evaluated extensions more positively than consumers who primed deliberation mode when decision-making. In addition, we hypothesized that perceived fit would mediate the effect of decision mode on their evaluation of a brand extension product and the mediating effect of perceived fit is supported. Related to hypothesis 1, the moderating role of the consumers' knowledge level and the similarity level of a brand extension product is supported. The results provide managerial implications that it is more favorable for marketers to induce an intuitive evaluation rather than let the consumer evaluate the product in a deliberate way. Especially, this effect is maximized when it is far extension. As a result, these results suggest that the computational and analytical cues need to be eliminated because the method of calculating or comparing specifications can eventually lead to deliberate thinking. This study addressed a marketing context to demonstrate positive effects generated by employing decision mode in brand extension situation and provided a perspective to increase the effect of decision mode.
