Inconsistencies between Consumer Choice and Prediction : Socioemtional Selectivity Theory and Terror Management Theory Perspective

  • Yun, TaiWoong
This study investigates what kind of products consumers consider before buying and what consumers predict will make them happy. Then, it examines if consumers choose products in a different manner based on socioemotional selectivity theory and terror management theory perspectives. In particular, consumers are exposed to tragic news stories in advertising and public relations context. This study examines empirically how consumers differ in their purchase decisions after exposure to such tragic news stories. In addition, after imagining spending one million won consumers chose what they want to spend the money on based on terror management theory and socioemotional selectivity theory. Specifically, many psychologists suggest that experiential spending makes people happier than material spending. This study investigates if perception of time left in life and/or death salience affect the direction and strength of preference for dexperiential and material products. Finally, when considering travelling abroad this study examines whether perception of time and/or death salience affect the travel partners consumers want to travel with or not. In sum, this study provides a summary of literature review of consumers’ suboptimal decision making about happiness and show empirical evidence for the reasons. Furthermore, this study provides conceptual and practical implications for balanced consumptions based on terror management theory and socioemotional selectivity theory.
