The Roles of the First Reply : Predecisional Information Distortion of Online Replies

This study was designed to examine the predecisional information distortion of online replies to an online news article. When an individual possessed a relatively mild or even no attitude toward a certain topic, the evaluation of subsequent information(reply) was distorted to support the tentative attitude. This distortion in favor of the tentative attitude was confirmed through a series of experiments using online replies. By starting with the diagnostic reply which has persuasive power, the tentative attitude toward the topic was installed. Participants then used the natural process of distorting new replies to support whichever attitude was leading. That is, the replies consistent with the leading attitude evaluated more persuasive and more agreeable compared to when evaluated in a control condition with no leading attitude. The impact of information distortion of online replies was not strong enough to change individuals’ original attitudes toward the topic. Specifically, the attitudes toward the topic reported after the experiments were not statistically significantly different from the ones reported in the control condition. Implications of the findings and future research were also discussed.
