Identifiable Victim Effect : Focusing on the Moderation Effect of the Spatial Distance, Advertising Skepticism, and Advertiser Type and the Mediation Effect of Guilt and Empathy

  • Nam, Kyoungtae
Identifiable victim effect refers to the tendency of individuals to give greater aid to identified victims of misfortune. The current study examined how the effect varied depending on the spatial distance, advertising skepticism, and advertiser type. The study also explored the principles of the identifiable victim effect by looking into the mediation effect of guilt and empathy. Eight types of questionnaires were distributed to a convenience sample of 299 university students. The study found that the identifiable victim effect was not a strong phenomenon as previously thought. A potential giver knowing the personal information about a victim did not have a comparably higher purchase intention (or donation intention). In addition, the identifiable victim effect was moderated by the spatial distance. Specifically, people’s responses in the Korean victim condition were more positive if there was personal information about a victim in the message while people’s responses in the African victim condition were more positive if there was not personal information about a victim in the message. The indirect-only mediation was found in the mediation analysis. To be specific, the direct effect and indirect effect offset each other and therefore the total effect appeared to decline. That is, people’s purchase intention (or donation intention) went down when they encountered personal information about a victim while their empathy (vicarious emotional response) level rose by coming across personal information about a victim and subsequently their purchase intention (or donation intention) went up. Finally, implications and limitations of the study were discussed.
