  • 정재선·Debiasing and Lay Informatics (DaLI) Lab, University of Oklahoma 책임연구원

Public Response to Social Problems : Testing the Effect of In-group Trust and Fake News Sharing

  • Jae-Seon Jeong
This study aims to understand the process of public response to social problems in the national crisis situation by exploring the relation among the social distrust, fake news sharing and in-group trust that affects COVID-19 preventive behaviors. Using a survey of 600 in South Korea, this study tested the moderated mediation model using the PROCESS macro. The result showed that the effect of social distrust on preventive behavior was mediated by fake news sharing. Also, social distrust directly improved preventive behaviors but fake news sharing suppressed this effect. Further, we found the conditional indirect effect of social distrust on preventive behavior through fake news sharing, which depends on the degree of in-group trust. Specifically, the results indicated that the indirect effect of social distrust on preventive behavior was greater for people with high in-group trust than those with low in-group trust. This result is expected to make a theoretical and practical contribution to developing strategies for promoting preventive behaviors in the crisis such as Covid-19.
